Jim Walker is the CIO for Investment Strategy and Solutions (ISS) for Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, the wealth management arm of Morgan Stanley. In this role he plays a key strategy, leadership and coordination role for MSSB, working closely with business units within ISS and across Morgan Stanley. The businesses in ISS provide products, build platforms, source third party investment products and managers, and create research content for MSSB’s Financial Advisors in both the U.S. and globally. The business units include: the Consulting Group – MSSB’s Advisory business, Investment Strategy and Research, Investment Products, and Alternative Investments.

In his current role he has direct responsibility for BD and Strategy, Relationship Management, Risk, Investment Research Delivery, and The Investment Group - Morgan Stanley’s High Net Worth Asset Management business. Jim is also responsible for all the functional areas that support Investment Strategy and Solutions: including Finance, Legal, Technology and HR.

Prior to this position, he was the Director of Finance, Risk, and Strategy for Global Wealth Management Investments at Citi. He joined Citi in November of 2006 as the COO of Investment Advisory Services.

Prior to joining Citi, Jim spent 20 years with Merrill Lynch where he served in a number of field and home office roles. In his last position at ML, he was the Chief Administrative Officer Americas for Merrill’s Global Private Client business. In this role he had a variety of strategic and operational responsibilities in support of Merrill’s Private Client business.

Before serving as CAO, Jim held several field leadership positions at ML: Managing Director of Merrill’s Wellesley, Massachusetts Complex, the Director of the Norfolk, Virginia Complex and Regional Sales Manager for the Mid-West District. He began his career in 1985 as a Financial Advisor with ML in Washington, DC and Northern Virginia.

Jim has a B.A. in Economics from the Catholic University of America and was a Sloan Fellow at MIT, where he received a S.M. in Management Science. Jim continues as a lecturer at M.I.T. at the Sloan school. He holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) designation.

He is married to Valerie Walker and has three children, Meredith (14), Jimmy (12) and Charlotte (9).
